Rupert’s Corner
It’s an unusual time for all of us. A war in Ukraine that defies logic and the effect that it is having here on costs of living - especially fuel. And with Covid on top of this…a few years ago none of this was foreseen but it’s amazing how quickly the world can change.
When I was elected as Mayor a little over two years ago I was talking about priorities of rates affordability, transport, managing the effects of growth, sustainability and climate change. Our focus has had to alter, not that these others topics aren’t priorities, but we have to consider how best Council can support and lead our community through challenging times.
Outside the day-to-day Council business and Government Reforms such as Three Waters, I am very lucky to have a close support network of family and friends who help keep me grounded. I enjoy gardening, especially at this time of year. As I have a lot of trees on my property the leaf fall seems to become an almost daily chore. I take great pride in my vegetable garden and what it produces. This year I have had a good crop of potatoes, beans, courgettes and plenty of tomatoes in the glass house.
Many will know I have a cat called Rupert who is a constant source of amusement - a real character who, in his own way, is very communicative. His daily routine starts at around 5am and if I’m not up at this time he is quick to remind me by walking over me multiple times in bed if I don’t get the hint. After I’ve filled his bowl he likes to help me in my home office before I head in to work. I say ‘help’, however this usually ends up with him lying on the keyboard if I haven’t given him sufficient attention.
We have always had pets in our lives and they form an important and close bond in family life. My last dog Winston was a beautiful natured golden retriever. He lived to be 16, passing away about three years ago before I was elected Mayor. He and Rupert had a close bond and I let time pass before considering another dog. I decided in the end it would be unkind to add another dog while I serve in my current role and as Master Rupert has assumed the role of number one pet – he probably wouldn’t cope with another pet vying for affection.
Those who are pet lovers will know how much our animals enjoy our company and crave our attention. And this goes both ways. For me, my garden and spending time with Rupert are how I relax. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends at many of our fabulous cafes, restaurants and bars and I enjoy walking regularly to keep up my fitness and weight loss focus in check.
We are fortunate to live in such a wonderful District that affords us fantastic opportunities to enjoy all that it has to offer. For sure it’s been a trying time and will continue to be so for the coming months ahead. We have much to be grateful for, despite matters we can’t control. Take care.
