Imperial Cup 66 Years Old

Woodend Bowling Club have taken out the Imperial Cup

Woodend Bowling Club have taken out the Imperial Cup this year, after a friendly tussle with Cust on 26 February.  Woodend simply proved too strong, winning both the matches, and the cup was presented to Gill Beale from the Cust President Rodger Gillespie.  The weather was deteriorating rapidly with a southerly storm on the way, so both teams were happy to retire to the clubrooms for a warm cuppa and afternoon tea.

The Imperial Cup has an interesting history, as originally contested between Cust Bowling Club and the Imperial Club at the long closed Imperial Club in Addington in 1956.

However in the early 1960s the Imperial Club’s sponsor, Browns Flour Mill, was sold, and as the club was situated on company land, they were forced to close.

The cup is now played annually between the Woodend and Cust clubs, with two teams of four players playing 21 ends, with an aggregate points system deciding the winners.

Cust has held the Cup for the past couple of years, so Woodend were delighted to have their turn with the cup after a convincing win.

The Cust team thanked Woodend for their excellent hospitality, and are sure to be back next year with an aim to regain the cup.
