3 Waters Reform

As you will have read, the Government is proposing changes to the way our drinking-water, stormwater and wastewater services are delivered to residents through a Three Waters Reform process.

The Government has given Councils until the end of September to provide feedback on whether we as a District wish to opt-in or opt-out of the proposed reform.

Before Council makes a decision about the next stage of the reform process we are keen to hear what our community thinks.

We’ve been sharing the best information we know to date regarding the reform proposal and asked residents for feedback for three weeks – closing on 5 September.

The Council received over 3,800 submissions over a three week period which is the largest feedback Council has ever received. The last was around 800 that involved the Long Term Plan and Stadium proposal. Ninety five percent (95 percent) of Waimakariri residents indicated that they wanted the Council to ‘opt-out’ of the Governments Three Waters Reform.

Residents have expressed a very clear position and the survey result demonstrates the publics concerns about the Government’s one-sided case for change.

Your views are important and the Council is appreciative of receiving such clear feedback. The Council will decide on the formal response to give to the Government at a special meeting on Tuesday 28 September.
